This is Aunt Zindzi crying as her mother made her way to Robben Island to go and see her father. She told me how she was crying for many reasons, one was being parted from her mom who she feared may never come back from Robben Island. The other was because she wanted to go with her to see her father who she had only seen through images because he was arrested when she was 2 years old. My father is the one that drove her and Mam Winnie to the airport. On their way back they stopped for an ice cream, my guess is he wanted to make her feel better. She told me how she never forgot that ice cream and every once in a while they would go out and do this be it after he picked her up from school or if her mom had been taken away again by security police.Which was sadly a usual occurrence. Side note: There are many unsung heroes in Vilakazi street that helped many families, they helped the Mandela family a lot through trying times. The ripple effect of having high profile activists as neighbors was no joke, they endured a lot of harassment and violence. When my father passed she came by and asked if I could give her one of his waistcoats or a scarf, she just needed something to remember him by because he’d been such an integral part of her life. She then told me stories which we planned on recording but sadly never got around to doing. Our relationship was odd in that she called me brother because of her relationship with my father meanwhile I was just a few years younger than her first born daughter @zolekamandela and few years older than her son who I grew up with. She was an intense, fiery person with a loving heart. I suppose it was hard not to be fiery having to deal with security police at such a young age, personally I believe she never let that go, and is still angry even in her passing. Her passing has shocked many of us,she wasn’t just the daughter of freedom fighters, she was also a freedom fighter. May her soul rest in peace and may she cry no more for the nation she sacrificed her childhood and her family for. copyright of this image belongs to Alf Kumalo #ZindziMandela #StruggleHeroes #Activists #Apartheid #Love #ANC #AlutaContinua #RestInPeace
Sirvió bien a Sudáfrica”, expresó Pandor.
On February 10, 1985, young, defiant and uncompromising Zindziswa Mandela took a message from Nelson Mandela who was serving a part of his life sentence in Pollsmoor, to the people at Jabulani Stadium that her father will not accept a conditional release because, “your freedom and mine cannot be separated.” It would be the characteristic of a lifetime of never bowing to fear nor favour. The daughter of her mother and father whose life’s work enable our freedom. There’s no doubt she didn’t just fade into the upper room. She would cause some hell going up there but comforted that will be with uTata and uMama who are in a special place up there. Her good intentions and hers and her family’s contribution to the struggle of freedom will always be remembered and appreciated. Rest in eternal Power. #ZindziMandela
