Today on May 6, 1937, the Hindenburg Airship suddenly bursts into flames and crashes only moments later.•••••Luftschiff Zeppelin #129, better known as the Hindenburg, was one of the biggest and most famous commercial airships in the world. It was designed, manufactured and operated by the Zeppelin Company in Germany. The ship was named after the German WWI Field Marshal, Paul von Hindenburg, who later served as the President of Germany from 1925 to 1934. The Hindenburg completed 17 trips during its first year in operation (10 to the United States and 7 to Brazil). However, only a short 14 months after making its maiden voyage, the Hindenburg was suddenly struck by disaster. During a routine transatlantic flight, an unknown spark engulfed the airship in flames while trying to safely land at a naval base in Manchester Township, New Jersey.•••••Click on the link in today’s story to continue reading the full post.

Inicialmente diseñado para utilizar helio no inflamable como gas de elevación, el embargo de las exportaciones de helio por parte de los Estados Unidos obligó finalmente al Hindenburg a utilizar hidrógeno en su lugar. El resultado fue devastador.
